Clean Water - why do birds need baths?
Small garden birds, whose diet consists mainly of seeds, are in most need of fresh drinking water as it is not naturally present in their diet. It is therefore vital to provide a bird bath or pond in your garden.
As far as the birds are concerned, a good bird bath has sloping sides and a rough surface allowing a safe grip. Birds are at their most vulnerable to predators when bathing, so they are less at risk from surprise attack if you situate the bird bath at least two metres from cover.
Bird baths should be cleaned regularly with a diluted, non-toxic disinfectant and scrubbed thoroughly to remove algae and droppings.
In very cold conditions, you may need to check your bird bath daily to break up any ice. To prevent your bird baths freezing only use additives specially designed for the purpose. Using other additives could poison birds or damage the delicate waterproofing of their plumage. As well as our specialist baths, a garden pond, bird bath or even an upturned bin lid can all provide this valuable water source.
